If your employees service or maintain machines where the unexpected startup, energization, or the release of stored energy could cause injury, the Lockout/Tagout standard applies.

If your employees service or maintain machines where the unexpected startup, energization, or the release of stored energy could cause injury, the Lockout/Tagout standard applies including, but not limited to: mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, and thermal energy. Record your facility’s equipment list using this Equipment Checklist. Next to each type of equipment, list the number of pieces of equipment in your facility and indicate the energy source requiring lockout. The list will help quantify the number of procedures and the nature of the lockout devices needed to accomplishment disablement.

Each piece of machinery may require a unique lockout device to ensure control of hazardous energy. Mark every different lockout device you need to ensure control of all hazardous energies in your facility.
