This AI-powered tool is built on 3M’s application engineering knowledge in tapes and adhesives—and there’s a version exclusive to MSC.
What’s the shear strength on a tape rated to handle 90-degree heat? Will this adhesive hold up in a humid environment, or crack under vibration? Can it cure in time to keep my production line moving?
Getting answers to critical questions like these used to mean digging through product data sheets and spec pages or handing the task to your distributor and waiting while they track down the information. Either way, it typically takes time, especially with complex applications such as tapes and adhesives.
That’s the gap 3M’s AI-powered technical assistant, Ask 3M, is built to close—and now Ask 3M is available directly from MSC.
Using Ask 3M feels like any conversational AI tool: Ask a question in plain language and get an answer back, possibly with follow-ups designed to fine-tune the discussion. But there’s a key difference between Ask 3M and most open-source AI tools: trust.
Behind every user’s question is 3M’s own technical documentation and application knowledge—spec sheets, product data and the kind of problem-solving guidance that normally comes from a conversation with an application engineer, or AE. Ask 3M covers whatever you need to know about 3M tapes and adhesives, from identifying the right product for a material pairing to understanding how something performs under real-world conditions.
Have a question about 3M tapes and adhesives? Ask 3M anything
For more than a century, the manufacturing industry has relied on 3M for products and services to run their business, and Ask 3M is a natural extension. Each document in the knowledge base goes through legal review and expert verification before it’s uploaded. The system itself was trained by 3M’s application engineers on what questions to ask, and what the answers mean.
“We call it ASPEC methodology for adhesives,” says Steve Bertling, business model innovation leader at 3M. “The questions that are asked are all based on a process within the company. It’s not a formula. It’s a conversation.”
That conversational approach is what gets a user to the right 3M product quickly, whether the question is about product information or a specific application, such as:
Which structural adhesive can bond carbon fiber and aluminum sheeting?
Can you compare details of 3M VHB Tape 5952 and Adhesive Transfer Tape 468MP?
How do I use 3M Scotch-Weld DP420NS Black?

Ask 3M works through the same discovery process that an application engineer would walk through in person, narrowing in on the variables that matter for the application at hand—only it’s greatly accelerated.
“We really want to harness that knowledge and answer those technical questions and get a customer to the right 3M solution,” Bertling says.
Once Ask 3M lands on a recommendation, the relevant spec sheet or technical document is available right there in the conversation, so there’s no separate hunt for the paperwork to back up the decision.
And when a user is ready to move forward, it links directly to the matching product page. People using MSC’s version of Ask 3M will see the product on mscdirect.com so they can click to buy with more confidence.
Ask 3M currently covers the brand’s tapes and adhesives portfolio, with additional categories expected over time. “We’re prioritizing it based on relevancy to the customer, and complexity,” Bertling explains. “Personal safety is the next one.”
3M’s application engineers are experts in answering complex questions, but that takes time and effort, Bertling acknowledges. Handing off the standardized, repeatable questions about products and applications to a trusted knowledge center allows 3M’s human resources to add more value.
“AEs can work on demonstrations. They can work on the next innovation,” Bertling says. “It gives sales reps more ability to work with their customers on the real problems they have to solve. Allowing more time to let them come up with new solutions to add to Ask 3M, in order to drive better products.”
