Ansell Earth: Thinking of People and Planet First
SMART Pack is a key initiative under Ansell Earth, their global product sustainability framework. Ansell Earth guides their sustainability efforts across all areas of the business, focusing on five core pillars: Material, Manufacturing, Packaging, Use, and End of Use.
This initiative reflects Ansell's dedication to minimizing environmental impact without compromising product quality or performance. SMART Pack demonstrates these principles in action, showcasing how innovative design and thoughtful material selection can deliver both functionality and sustainability.
By reducing packaging size, incorporating recyclable materials, and optimizing shipping efficiency, SMART Pack aligns with Ansell's mission to reduce their environmental footprint at every stage of the product lifecycle.
SMART Pack: Smart For the Cleanroom
In the highly controlled environment of cleanrooms, protecting the product is paramount. Designed with cleanroom requirements, transfer, and handling in mind, SMART Pack ensures optimal product protection while supporting environmental sustainability. The result is a system that reduces waste, optimizes storage, and enhances cleanroom operations, all while maintaining Ansell’s uncompromising quality standards.
The journey begins with automation. As shown in their Automated Packing Process video, SMART Pack’s design ensures minimal human contact, drastically reducing contamination risks. Each step of the packing process: placing gloves on the inner wrap, folding the wrap, and sealing the pouch, is carefully executed by machines to ensure sterility and precision.

SMART Pack: Smart For the Environment
Every element of SMART Pack is designed to minimize its environmental impact. By making pouches 56% smaller, Ansell is saving over 20.4 tons of plastic annually, the equivalent of 2 million plastic water bottles1. The shipper cases, now 15% smaller and 30% lighter2, improve transportation efficiency, allowing us to ship 18% more gloves per shipment3.
Smaller, lighter shipper cases considerably reduce CO2 emissions from 117 tonnes to 90 tonnes annually. Equating to 73,340 fewer miles driven by delivery vans - that's almost 3 times around the globe!4
Beyond reducing plastic waste, Ansell has eliminated paper Instructions for Use (IFU) by including a QR code directly on the packaging. This transition to digital Instructions for Use (IFU) saves 17 trees annually5 while making information more accessible and convenient for users.
Sustainability Recap in Numbers:
SMART Pack’s benefits go beyond what meets the eye. Consider these impactful statistics:
1 million fewer plastic bags used annually thanks to the new packing configuration3.
Smaller pouches saving 20.4 tons of plastic every year1.
Shipper cases are made from 100% recycled cardboard and lined with 30% recycled HDPE plastic.
Smaller, lighter shipper cases have reduced CO2 emissions by 27 tons annually, equivalent to planting over 1,000 trees6.

Efficiency Meets User-Friendliness
In sterile environments, every detail matters. The SMART Pack doesn’t just deliver sustainability, it enhances usability with thoughtful design and functionality.
The inner and outer bags are crafted with user convenience and cleanroom compliance in mind:
Inner Bag:
- Gamma irradiation label for sterile assurance.
- Easy-tear opening for quick and clean access.
- Made from recyclable Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) which can also be recycled7.
- Reduced printed areas to lower emissions during production.
- Barcode labels replaced with inkjet printing to minimize contamination risks.
Outer Bag:
- Easy-tear opening for smooth handling.
- Made from recyclable Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) which can also be recycled7.
- Clear inkjet-printed traceability information for visibility and compliance.
Ansell's Packing & Unpacking Process video highlights how the SMART Pack is configured within a carton and designed for intuitive unpacking. The process is designed to minimize contamination risks while supporting efficient handling and also saves valuable time for operators in high-pressure cleanroom environments.
For operators in critical environments, SMART Pack delivers peace of mind. Redesigned shipper cases maximize storage efficiency by accommodating more SMART Pack shipper cases per standard and Euro pallet compared to current dimensions. Despite the compact packaging, each case contains the same number of gloves, ensuring unmatched reliability and operational efficiency.
