Despite many workplace safety improvements made throughout the years, injuries are still a big problem. Despite many workplace safety improvements made throughout the years, injuries are still a big problem. In 2015, private industry employers in the U.S. reported approximately 2.9 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses such as burns, lacerations, cuts and fractures, as well as latex and chemical allergies.

Workplace injuries can not only have severe effects on the individual, but also can represent serious drawbacks for a company’s business performance. The associated direct costs of an injury range from medical expenses to rehabilitation costs and workers’ compensation, whereas indirect costs are caused by replacement workers, accident investigation, productivity loss and demotivation of workers.

Global and local trends also have an impact on your company’s economic performance. These trends include:

  • Increased health and safety standards and regulations
  • Increased focus on sustainability and waste reduction
  • Vendor standardization and consolidation
  • Global standardization in supplies and processes

As a result, demands for compliance, consolidation and simplification necessitate rapid changes and are forcing companies to find new ways to reduce PPE and total facility costs without sacrificing worker safety. However, many companies aren’t analyzing the PPE they use on a regular basis. For example, they may have styles of gloves that don’t accurately protect workers, workers may use too many gloves instead of a multi-purpose style, wear the glove for too short or too long of a time period and ultimately may not be selecting the right glove for the job. All these mishaps quickly add up – not only in unnecessary product and lost efficiencies, but in actual dollars.

By regularly analyzing a PPE program, these types of safety program flaws can be identified, addressed and solved to find better solutions that not only prevent injuries, but also save time and money. However, taking on the task of auditing an entire PPE program can be daunting. Companies should be able to look to their PPE manufacturers with their safety management program – that’s why Ansell developed their Ansell Guardian service.

Ansell Guardian provides an integrated approach to improve business performance. This proprietary service aims to help companies select the right PPE solution to improve their safety, productivity and cost performance.
