Selection Criteria for Air-Powered Hoists
Load Capacity (lbs or tons): This refers to the maximum weight a hoist is designed to lift, as specified by the manufacturer. When selecting a hoist, carefully account for the total load weight—including any attachments such as slings, grabs, or spreader beams—to ensure it does not exceed the rated capacity.
Lift (ft): The maximum vertical distance the hoist must raise or lower a load. Common standard lift heights include 8, 10, 15, and 20 feet.
Lifting Medium: Choose between chain or wire rope, depending on the application. Consider whether a true vertical lift is required, as this may influence the best option.
Power Supply: A clean, dry air supply is required, meeting or exceeding the hoist’s minimum CFM (cubic feet per minute) specification.
Push Button Cord Length: Standard length is typically 4 feet shorter than the lift height.
Abnormal Operating Conditions: Consider whether the hoist will operate reliably in challenging environments—such as corrosive atmospheres, outdoor settings, dusty or dirty areas, extreme temperatures, or hazardous locations.
Duty Cycle Requirements: Ensure the selected hoist meets the application's duty cycle demands. Choosing a hoist with a lower service classification than required can lead to premature wear and may void the manufacturer's limited warranty.
Type of Suspension: Options include hook (swivel or rigid), lug mount, or trolley suspension—available as push, hand-geared, or air motorized.
Headroom Requirements: The vertical distance between the load hook (at its highest position) and the hoist’s upper suspension point. This is the minimum clearance needed between the upper and lower hooks.
Trolley Hand Chain Drop (ft): Applicable for hand-geared trolleys; refers to the length of chain required for manual trolley operation.
Trolley Speed (ft/min): Applicable to motorized trolleys; indicates the travel speed in feet per minute.
Beam Size: Refers to the dimensions and type of beam the trolley will run on; it must be compatible with the trolley’s wheel and flange specifications.
