Understanding Plastic Tubing: Types and Applications

Nylon plastic tubing offers excellent chemical resistance to weak acids, solvents, and hydraulic fluids. It's known for high impact and kink resistance, minimal moisture absorption, and superior dimensional stability. Nylon is produced in several compound formulations, such as Nylon-11, and is non-toxic, odorless, and tasteless.

One of the most versatile plastic tubing options, PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) handles food products and mild chemicals well. Clear with excellent visibility of the material being conveyed, PVC is non-wetting and can be easily washed clean between applications. With braid reinforcement, this type of plastic tubing is pressure-rated and kink-resistant. Avoid using PVC tubing with ketones, esters, chlorinated solvents, highly corrosive materials, or petroleum-based fluids.

Silicone tubing is best for applications needing wide temperature tolerance and resistance to UV, ozone, and environmental factors. Its tasteless and odorless properties make it perfect for food and beverage systems. Platinum-cured versions are suitable for medical-grade use. Not recommended for use with concentrated acids, oils, or solvents.

These fluoropolymer-based plastic tubings offer exceptional chemical resistance and thermal stability. Non-toxic, abrasion-resistant, and ideal for highly corrosive or extreme temperature environments.

Also known as urethane. Polyurethane (PUR) tubing offers excellent flexibility, memory, and kink resistance. Ether-based PUR is better for water exposure, while ester-based versions are more durable but degrade with moisture. Great for pressure and vacuum applications, especially where fuel or oil compatibility is needed. Contains no plasticizers.

Lightweight and cost-effective, polyethylene tubing is a general-purpose plastic tubing suited for food, chemical, and air applications. While not pressure-rated for heavy-duty tasks, it performs well in low-pressure environments and offers good weather and chemical resistance.

TPE tubing combines the characteristics of thermoplastics and rubber materials. It’s typically made from a blend of EPDM, Buna, SBR, or other synthetic and natural rubbers. When mixed with a thermoplastic material, the resulting material offers excellent chemical and abrasion resistance, high tensile strength, and resistance to environmental conditions.
