Master Every Strike with the Right Types of Hammers

A bevel on the striking face or a chamfer reduces the chance of chipping or damaging the hammer's face, making the hammer safer to use. It also allows hammer claws to easily slip under nail heads that are either embedded or close to the surface.

Higher quality wooden handles are ergonomically shaped from hickory. Fiberglass and tubular steel hammers should include a vinyl or plastic grip molded to the handle to prevent slipping. Solid steel handles should feature an air-cushioned grip for shock absorption.

Forged steel heads are best for strength, while heat-treated heads ensure a hammer's durability and wear resistance.

The claw may be curved or straight, depending on the hammer type. A curved-claw hammer provides greater leverage for removing nails, while a rip or straight-claw design is better suited for demolition and prying tasks.

The eye is the connection point between the head and handle. On traditional hammers, it ensures a secure head-to-handle assembly when manufactured separately. Many modern hammers, however, are forged from a single piece of steel, eliminating any risk of the head separating from the handle.

The face is the business end of the hammer, responsible for striking. High-quality hammers often provide a larger striking surface (face space) than other hammers of equivalent weight, allowing for more accurate strikes and easier, faster nail driving.

These components absorb the impact of each strike. In quality hammers, these parts are hot-forged and heat-treated to achieve precise steel tempering, resulting in a durable, high-performance tool built to withstand repeated use.
