The design is similar to that of a hand chain hoist, but instead of a hand chain, it uses a lever or handle. The user moves the lever back and forth to shift the load in small increments. Come alongs are not built for speed but for precise control. They are typically lighter and more portable than traditional hoists or winches.
Hoist Types
Coil Chain
The most used hoist chain due to its flexibility in all directions and ease of visual inspection for wear.
Roller Chain
Typically more expensive than coil chain. It is harder to inspect and does not tolerate side pulls (i.e., when the pull is not aligned straight from hook to hook). However, unlike link chains, roller chains can be spliced if additional length or repairs are required.
Wire Rope
Wire rope hoists are usually less expensive than chain units but offer lower lifting capacity. They are more prone to internal wear and abuse, and damaged strands can be difficult to detect as they often fray or break from the inside.
Strap Hoist
Common in the utility industry due to their non-conductive properties, strap hoists are ideal for electrical or high-voltage environments.
