Basics of Padlock Keying Options

What is a Padlock?

A padlock is a portable lock that secures your applications and items by using a shackle locking mechanism. A U-shaped piece of metal locks into the body using a key or a combination. Padlocks are typically used to secure applications like doors, gates, lockers, and even storage units.

Keyed Different (KD):

Each padlock comes with a unique key that does not open any other lock. By default, all padlocks are supplied with different keys unless a specific keying option is requested.

Keyed Alike (KA):

A group of padlocks that can be opened with the same key. This option provides convenience by eliminating the need for multiple keys when using several padlocks. Many domestically produced padlocks are available in keyed-alike configurations.

Master Key (MK):

In a master key system, one master key can open multiple locks, even though each lock has its own unique key.

Grand Master Keyed (GMK):

In a grand master key system, one grand master key can open multiple groups of locks. Each group is controlled by its master key, but the grand master key overrides them all.

Restricted (R):

Restricted key systems use factory-controlled keyways to prevent unauthorized key duplication. This provides enhanced security by limiting access to duplicate keys.

Key Retaining (Deadlocking):

This option prevents the key from being removed when the padlock is open, ensuring the padlock is locked before the key can be taken out.

Rekeyable:

A rekeyable padlock allows the cylinder to be removed and either re-pinned or replaced. This feature enables easy rekeying without replacing the entire lock—ideal for situations like employee turnover or lost keys. Replacement cylinders are available for quick servicing, and rekeying can be performed by a locksmith.
