Understand what a torque wrench is, learn about the different types, and how to choose the right one for your application.
A torque wrench is a tool that applies a specific amount of torque to fasteners, like bolts or nuts, to ensure users can assemble parts with the correct tension, without causing damage from over- or under-tightening. Most torque wrenches are calibrated for use from 20% to 100% of their maximum capacity.
Important: Never use a torque wrench to remove tightened fasteners; it can affect calibration or cause permanent damage.
Torque is preset by turning the ring above the handle to the desired setting on the wrench shaft.
A click can be felt and heard once it reaches the set torque value.
To remove the preset, pull the handle away from the end of the wrench until it clicks.
Available scales: Foot-pounds, inch-pounds, Newton-meters.
Designed for use in one direction only, either clockwise or counterclockwise.
Do not use this tool to loosen fasteners.
Accuracy: ±4% (±3% for import models).
Meets or exceeds ASME B107.14M and ISO6789 standards.
Specifically designed for production lines where many fasteners must be tightened to the same torque.
Functions like adjustable models but is not user-adjustable.
Torque value must be set using a tester; most are drop-shipped from the factory pre-set to the user's requirements.
Accuracy: ±4% (±3% for import models).
Meets or exceeds ASME B107.14M and ISO6789 standards.
Using adapters that alter the length or leverage of your torque wrench can affect accuracy. When using drive torque adapters, consult the machinery’s handbook for correct torque offset calculations.
Ask yourself:
Do I need to measure torque (use a direct reading type) or apply torque (use an application type)?
Should the operator be able to change the torque settings?
What torque range is most commonly needed for my tasks?
Apply load to the center of the grip.
Avoid using cheater bars unless supplied by the manufacturer.
Apply load at a constant, steady speed.
Use the wrench within its middle range for best accuracy and ergonomics.
Always wear safety glasses when using hand tools.
