VIDEO: 60sec Troubleshooting–Drilling: Feed Rate Basics
In this short video, OSG discusses the importance of feed rate when drilling.
In this short video, OSG discusses the importance of feed rate when drilling.
Welcome to OSG's 60-second troubleshooting video. When drilling, you must understand the concept of how fast the drill moves through the material. This is called the drill's feed rate. With drilling there are two ways to talk about feed. You can talk aboutit in the sense of how far the drill advances per one revolution known as IPR or millimeters per revolution for metric units. The second way to talk about drill feed is the velocity of moves per minute, known as IPM or inches per minute. IPR means inch per revolution and is how much the drill advances into the material per one revolution. The blue dot on the circle represents location of one corner of the drill. As it spins around the circle, it represents one full revolution of the drill. By the end of this animation the drill has fully revolved three times. Assume this drill has advanced 0.010" in three revolutions. We can calculate that the drill's IPR is 0.0033". IPM means inches per minute. This tells us how fast the drill is penetrating the material per minute. To calculate IPM you must multiply the IPR, or inches per revolution, by the spindle rotation speed also known as RPM. Let's say we have a quarter-inch diameter drill and are spinning at 4000 RPM. The recommended IPR for this drill is .0075". The calculated feed rate should then be 30 inches per minute.
