In this episode of Quick Tips from MSC Industrial Supply, we explore the PIP Traverse Safety Helmet and how it helps address emerging head protection needs in today's industrial workplaces.
Unlike traditional hard hats that primarily focus on overhead impacts, the Traverse features ANSI Type II protection to help protect workers from side, front, and rear impacts. The helmet also incorporates a secure chin strap system designed to help keep protection in place during slips, trips, and falls, one of the most common workplace injury scenarios.
The Traverse further enhances protection with integrated Mips® technology, a low-friction layer originally developed for sports helmets that helps redirect rotational forces during angled impacts. Combined with a growing industry focus on all-around head protection, these features make the Traverse a modern solution for workers who face hazards from every direction.

ANDREA: Hello and welcome to Quick Tips from MSC Industrial Supply, a show where we invite the manufacturing community to share their expertise with us. When it comes to head protection, not all impacts are created equal. Most hard hats are designed to protect from objects falling from above. But what about impacts from the side, the front or the back? That's where a new generation of safety helmets comes in. Let's take a look at PIP's Traverse Industrial Climbing Helmet.
SPONSOR VIDEO: Hi, my name is Dan Birch. I'm Category Manager for Above the Neck Products here at PIP. I'm here today to talk to you about PIP's brand new safety helmet, the Traverse.
So one of the great things about Traverse is really its uniqueness. Not only does it pass the Crown Impact Standard, it also includes a Type Two system. So you're protected from the side and the front, in the back. But it also includes this mint system.
One of the number one questions that we get here at PIP is about hard hat standards. So I'm going to break it down very simply. If you're worried about things hitting you from above, that is ANSI Type 1.
If you are worried about things hitting you from the sides, the front or the back, that is ANSI Type 2.
The third standard, which isn't relevant here in the United States, is a European standard EN-12492, which, when you see other hard hat manufacturers in the United States, reference them, they're talking about the front, the back and the sides impact.
One of the greatest things that's coming out as a revolution in the hard hat industry is the conversation about slips, trips and falls.
One of the key elements of hard hats right now, especially safety helmets are this, the simplest of things. The chin strap. The reason for this is if you've ever seen anybody fall with a hard hat on, a normal hard hat, the first thing to fall off is always the hard hat, which means when the person hits the ground they’re without the device that's supposed to protect them when their head hits the ground. So all these helmets will include a chin strap.
With that, we've also included an extra feature in the Traverse, and that is the MIPs system. So the MIPs system, which came from the sporting world. So think about motocross, skiing, snowboarding and biking, has a low friction layer that is added to the system. What that allows is an extra layer of low-friction element, which will allow the hard hat to move, and not necessarily you get 100% of the impact, so it's dissipating that impact from the sides. So that's the basics of the Traverse.
