Hello and welcome to Quick Tips from MSC Industrial Supply, a show where we invite industry pros to share their expertise with us.
Today we have tips sent in from MCR Safety on reducing cuts and lacerations at the workplace. Let's take a look.
Hand injuries are widespread in the workplace, with 121,000 reported by the BLS in 2019. Cuts, lacerations and puncture injuries make up many of these, with 46,740 cut injuries and 7680 puncture injuries. Cut and puncture hazards are present throughout numerous industries, including food services, construction and manufacturing. Those most impacted are food preparation personnel, sheet metal workers, construction laborers and maintenance installers. The best defense is wearing cut-resistant and puncture-resistant work gloves, protecting the hand from sharp objects such as hand tools, materials and knives. Those looking for the best protection need to understand ANSI performance cut levels.
For cut-resistant gloves. ANSI uses a nine-level scale, A1 to A9, to rate performance. The higher the rating, the greater resistance required to cut through the material. For puncture-resistant gloves, ANSI rates glove performance using five levels, one through five. The higher the number, the more force required to puncture the glove. At MCR Safety, we've got you covered offering over 100 different cut and puncture gloves.
