Hi, I'm Eric Key. I'm with Kevlar technical sales with DuPont Personal Protection. Today we're going to talk about Kevlar and how it relates to hot contact surfaces. So with this demonstration here I have a surface here at 212 degrees Fahrenheit so roughly what you would see at a steam pipe temperature in a plant or maybe what a hot part would be.
I've got a Kevlar-based glove here. This particular glove is from PIP. It's their G-Tec line glove. It's Kevlar based and I'm going up against an HPPE-based glove over here. Both of these are 13 gauge gloves. Both have foam nitrile coatings on them so all things being equal it's just the fiber difference. Pay attention to the temperature displays as I bring these hands down and the worker comes in contact with the hot surface. This display feeds from the HPPE glove, this display feeds from the Kevlar-based glove.
So we come down, we grab onto that hot surface. You can see now how fast the heat's starting to move through the HPPE glove. So 90 degrees you felt pain, at 120 degrees you're gonna hit the second degree burn mark. So we now have a second degree burn over there. You can see over here with the Kevlar glove we're feeling pain, we know something's going on, but we still got that time left to be able to respond to the incident and get our hands away or pull our hands away and get the glove off of our hands and respond to it. So when the heat is on, what would you rather have?
