Most creative part of my job is being able to come up with things that you don’t have components for. I need to be able to figure out a way to make this project go from here to here that’s not been done before. That is a really cool way to spend your days.
My name is Patrick McEachern. I am a contract industrial mechanic, also known as a Millwright. I’m in the trades for about 10 years now though I am new as a Millwright. A millwright is someone who provides a vast array of services within the industrial sector from welding and fabrication to plumbing to rigging and hoisting to doing basic electrical work and just touch on every single trade. We are the multi-tool of the trades.
I’m not a morning person, so my mornings are kinda hectic. I’m the guy that packs up my truck the night before, make sure that I have everything for the job that I need to do that day. Come in, unload my tools, meet with the engineers, meet with the client, what are we doing, what’s going forward. The most satisfying and rewarding part of this job is being able to create things that keep other people employed. As Millwrights we build structures or we repair machinery that keeps people working on their jobs, so keeping other people employed is a great motivator.
Great tools matter when you’re doing this for a living. You can accomplish just about anything with a set of basic tools. The problem is that takes times. A great tool is a tool that saves you money, is durable enough to get the job done, and is a tool that you can rely on. Great tools are what separate the professionals from the rest of us. Dependability is everything in this business. That doesn’t matter whether you’re talking about people or tools. As a Millwright, you are the reason that an industrial shop like this is kept running.
