ANDREA: Hello and welcome to Quick Tips from MSC Industrial Supply, a show where we invite industry leaders to share their expertise with us. Today we have a tip from our friends at Honeywell Howard Leight on inserting disposable earplugs.
Let's take a look.
MARK KIRSCH: Hi there. I'm Mark Kirsch, global marcom leader for PPE. And today we're talking about quick tips to help you properly fit in ear plugs. Some of the common missteps that you see, somebody will pinch the tip of the earplug and you end up with a big ridge that doesn't want to go into your ear canal.
Another thing that I often see is folding over of the earplug, which gives you a little bit of a canal in there and it lets sound directly into your ear canal. Again, another no go.
What you want to do is roll that earplug down to its smallest form. Sometimes people even use two fingers. So that's a nice tip there. And then what you want to do is reach over with your opposite hand and pull to straighten your ear canal. Pull back to open up and up. And you push that earplug in. And what you want to do is let it sit there, usually around 20 to 40 seconds, right? You want to let that earplug fully expand.
The reason to do that is because it wants to push back out. Holding it in place will allow that foam to expand into your ear canal and then fully block that sound.
If you have mobility issues, if you can't reach around your head, you might want to try an earplug like a reusable one that has a stem. It's a lot easier to insert into your ear.
As you can see, that earplug has stopped moving. I no longer hear that crinkling sound inside my ear, and it's fully secure.
Thank you. Have a good day.
