Mitutoyo’s MeasurLink SPC Software Helps Manufacturers Turn Inspection Data Into Profit

Metalworking shops today are under pressure from every direction: demanding customers in aerospace, medical, and oil and gas; tighter tolerances; and the need to prove that every part meets spec. That’s driving more facilities to invest in statistical process control (SPC) and data management tools that go far beyond paper logs and ad-hoc spreadsheets.
“Manufacturers today are really trying to improve efficiency, improve throughput and reduce scrap, and in order to do all those things, they need the data about what they’ve made,” says Hany Abdel-Motaleb, data management and MeasurLink® sales engineer at Mitutoyo.

“Being able to store and retain electronic records of inspection data for long periods of time is required, especially when you’re dealing with high-risk industries such as aerospace, medical, and oil and gas,” he says.
Abdel-Motaleb says MeasurLink 11, the newest version of the software introduced in July 2026, was redesigned to make implementation, navigation and daily use easier, especially for facilities that don’t have a dedicated SPC or metrology expert.
“The main idea with version 11 was ease of use, so that really drove all of the new developments,” he says.
For manufacturers dealing with lean staffing and constant firefighting, these are some of the changes that are meant to reduce friction:
• Faster reporting. A revamped report template lets shops standardize on a few professional formats, rather than reinventing every report. Turnkey options, such as nonconformance reports, let users generate key documents in a couple of clicks.
• Simpler navigation. A new landing page and quick-action buttons make it clearer where to start, whether you’re creating a new part, launching a job or reviewing results.
• On-screen, context-aware help. Users can see guidance alongside the task they’re working on, instead of stopping to search manuals.
One of the most tangible changes for small and mid-size shops is the quick setup feature, which shortens the time from “new part” to “collecting data.”
“With quick setup, you can put all the information you want in it, and then hit finish, and now you can collect some data. So there’s no navigation needed. Simplicity is really what we were going for here,” Abdel-Motaleb says.
Another operator-friendly touch is the dark mode option, which is aimed at reducing eye strain in dimly lit shop environments.
One of the most useful enhancements of MeasurLink is OCR (optical character recognition) and ballooning, which automates the process of turning engineering drawings into usable inspection plans by placing numbered circles (balloons) next to each dimension or design feature on an engineering blueprint.
On a simple print, labeling dimensions by hand isn’t too difficult. But on real-world jobs, Abdel-Motaleb notes, it can quickly become overwhelming.
“When we talk about things that aren’t a demo print, there may be 50, 100, 500 different characteristics that need to get labeled, and so to do that manually is very time-consuming and very tedious,” he says.
With OCR and ballooning, MeasurLink automatically reads the dimensions, adds balloons to the print and builds an inspection plan directly from the drawing. That’s especially important for job shops that are running high-mix, low-volume work, where engineers might otherwise spend hours creating new plans for each job.
Instead of manually rebuilding inspection plans as often as 20 times a day, shops can move from print to inspection much faster, while still capturing the structured data they need for SPC and quality documentation.
From a management perspective, the value of SPC shows up when it changes what happens on the floor in real time by catching issues before they become expensive scrap or customer complaints.
On the operator side, MeasurLink presents results as they’re collected. When a measurement falls outside the tolerance band, the software forces a pause.
“When you capture some data and it’s in the red, the operator knows that it’s out of specification and that stops everything, and they can document the reasons,” Abdel-Motaleb says.
Capturing a simple reason code at that moment—such as tool breakage, setup error or wrong offset—gives engineers and supervisors a much clearer picture of where problems are coming from.
Just as important is what happens before the data goes out of spec. Rather than waiting until parts fail, the software can watch for trends that suggest trouble may be brewing ahead.
“When the data shows several points starting to trend downward, that’s the time to act,” he adds. “MeasurLink can detect those trends, alert the operator, and prompt corrective action so you fix the issue before it turns into scrap.”
A common example is tool wear: As a cutting tool approaches the end of its life, dimensions can start drifting. By linking those trends to specific tools or machines, shops can fine-tune tool-change intervals and avoid both premature changes and late, scrap-generating ones.
For many manufacturing facilities, the hardest part of implementing SPC is getting consistent, reliable data from busy operators. If data entry is slow or painful, people will revert to shortcuts.
That’s why MeasurLink’s emphasis on digital, push-button data capture matters. The goal is to connect directly to gages and systems so that recording results is as simple as pressing a button.
“The idea is to do this electronically and automatically, essentially at the push of a button,” Abdel-Motaleb says. “You want to make it easy for machinists, operators and inspectors by giving them digital tools where they don’t have to stop what they’re doing to type data in.”
